During our visit to Sasaki Brewery in Natori City, we had the privilege of meeting Sasaki-san, the current owner and a passionate steward of the brewery’s long-standing legacy. Established in 1871, this historic Japanese sake brewery has been a vital part of the local community for over 150 years, crafting sake that reflects the land, water, and spirit of Miyagi Prefecture.

One of the most moving stories Sasaki-san shared with us was about the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, a tragedy that devastated much of the Tohoku region. The brewery was completely destroyed, leaving behind only memories and rubble. Yet in the face of unimaginable loss, Sasaki-san and his team chose resilience over despair. With incredible determination, they resumed sake production in temporary facilities, and after years of hard work, the brewery was rebuilt on its original site in 2019—restoring both a physical structure and a cultural landmark.
